Review: The Lavaux

Worth A Try

TLDR: The Lavaux = fondue, fondue = The Lavaux. Next time you get a hankering for cheese, check this place out for a cute winter date night that will transport you to the Swiss Alps, if only for a moment.

The simple things can be the best things. That’s certainly what the folks at The Lavaux, a wine and fondue bar seem to think. I hesitate to call this a restaurant, because is there an actual kitchen? I’m not sure. But the menu is extremely straightforward: a cheese board, a charcuterie board, or fondue. Not much to deliberate.

So when you’re feeling cheese-y, The Lavaux is the perfect place to scratch your itch. The fondue is delicious – just the right consistency – and comes with unlimited fresh bread, baby potatoes, and pickles. To say I scraped the last dregs of cheese from the bowl would be an understatement. The robust wine list makes for a good pairing, and taking into account the homey wood-paneled interior, you may deceive yourself a glass or two deep into thinking you are now in Switzerland, enjoying a warming meal after a day on the slopes.

This is a prime spot for a cozy winter date night (last minute Valentine’s date plans anyone?). Although I didn’t have the stomach space to try it, they also have chocolate fondue, so it may be worth coming just for dessert.

The Lavaux also gets brownie points for their “secret message” event on Tuesdays. Basically if you go on a Tuesday, your waiter will help you pass notes between tables so you can “chat” with your neighbors while you eat. I found it to be a very silly and entertaining sidebar to the meal. Who knows? Maybe you make a friend.
