Review: Kubeh

Updated: Feb 10

 Solid Choice

TLDR: Kubeh is a great neighborhood spot. It earns serious brownie points for being such a reliable standby. You won’t necessarily go out of your way to eat here, but you’ll happily end up at Kubeh for a last minute “something healthy” dinner on a Monday night.

Kubeh is the weekday booty call of restaurants. You both know this isn’t a real love affair, but that’s okay, because it’s a mutually beneficial relationship. Kubeh is always there when you call – importantly on Mondays when many neighboring restaurants are closed – and makes you feel good without you putting in too much effort.

The food is by and large very good. Being a Middle Eastern restaurant, you won’t feel horribly greasy and heavy after a meal here – a solid healthy-ish choice. I always get the labne dip (it’s great) which comes with a nice puffy pita. The hummus is welcome to the party too. Going down the menu, you can’t go wrong with the mezzes (torshi, shirazi, eggplant, halloumi, cauliflower– all excellent). I’d vouch for most of the small plates too, and the chicken schnitzel is impressive. Nicely crispy. The only wrong turn you can take a Kubeh is… well the kubeh. It’s bland and doughy – a must miss really. Awkward… 👀

The brick-walled restaurant space is enjoyable here, and everything fits within the Middle Eastern theme. I particularly like the rugs hung on the wall, which really do make the space feel cozier on a winter night. Kubeh also has a large outdoor seating area so it works well for any season. Importantly, this is an easy walk in and thus a good backup plan if you want to shoot for something a little harder to get into first.

Do I see this relationship really going somewhere? Maybe one day I'll use the "L" word. But for now, I’m happy to keep this staple in my back pocket.
