Review: Carriage House

Don't Waste Your Time And Money

TLDR: Carriage House is forgettable in a neighborhood chock full of high quality eats at a similar price point. While the vibe here is nice, I’d skip the gimmicky presentation for better overall quality elsewhere.

Carriage House is a cute spot in the West Village serving up new American food. That’s basically all there is to say, and that’s the problem.

While Carriage House nails the decor – it has a nice date night vibe and seems pretty popular – the food falls totally flat. The “wow” factor comes only in the form of gimmicks. In particular, the “candle butter” and bread. It’s just a cube of flavored butter with a lit wick inside it, but it doesn’t actually make the butter soft, because only the part near the wick gets melty… I’m not going to eat a candle wick, thank you. Not to mention, they served it with brioche (actually, pretty good by itself) which is a super buttery bread already and really doesn’t need a big slab of pumpkin spiced butter if you ask me (you’re reading this, so you did).

The best items here were the canapé bites, which were both cute (ie. small) and most of them tasty. The best one had scallops with some kind of creamy lemon, that was quite good. The rest of the meal was downright unremarkable. Salad, blah. Bison short ribs, whatever. Perhaps the seafood pastas were the right move if the scallop bite was any indication, but my hunch is you can find better meals in this neighborhood for your money. Save your cash for L’accolade or The Noortwyck for a swoon-worthy date night.
