Solid Choice

TLDR: Bobo is a very cute little French spot in the West Village. After passing the french onion soup test, I can safely say this place has a lot of potential and is worth trying the next time you’re craving a french food coma.

If you know me, you know that my barometer for a great French restaurant is their french onion soup. I’m basically required by law to order it at any new place. Bobo is no exception, and I’m happy to say they’ve passed the test.

Plus, unlike my prior pick for Best French Onion Soup in NYC™ (Le Singe, sadly a victim of the pandemic), Bobo has real vibe. From the cute little tables in the front to the cute plants scattered around to the cute bar (and bartender), this spot feels like it could show up in the next ripoff-of-a-beloved-classic Netflix romcom. So it's a no-brainer for a date night or a catch up drink with a friend.

Foodwise, everything was solid and the french onion soup was quite good – richly caramelized and brown with a hefty amount of cheese on top, just as it should be. I especially enjoyed the crispy artichokes, which remind me of why the French have dominated international cuisine for so long – no one makes food so complex to cook look as simple as they do (frying artichokes + making bearnaise = do not attempt at home). And I have to give them brownie points for the cocktails. These were excellent and very strong, so if you’re like me and lost all tolerance from staying home for 2 years, be careful.

Fortunately I was able to walk in at the bar, but Bobo isn’t exactly a secret and the place was pretty full. If you go, you’ll probably want to make a resi and check out their “garden” which I have not seen but sounds mysterious as I have no idea where they were hiding it.
